The 3 W's of Mullein

8/28/2019

When we first started researching Mullein, we were blown away. This plant, which is technically a weed, has a long list of benefits for the entire body (not just human bodies) and it basically plants itself. In fact, you've probably seen it on the roadside or in your backyard without even realizing what it is.

What?
Mullein, or Verbascum thapsus, is native to Europe and Asia. Its has large leaves at it’s base and it’s spear-like flowering shoot can grow up to 6ft tall, with bright yellow flowers. Both it’s flowers and it’s leaves may be harvested internal and topical use. In the 16th Century, Mullein was thought to have magical powers. Though this theory was never proven, it was the go-to cough syrup of the time. Since then, more has been discovered about Mullein that

Why?

The 3 W's of Melaleuca

8/21/2019

Growing up, we had products containing Melaleuca all over our house. You know the products I speak of. It was in our laundry room, our kitchen, our bathroom. It had a very distinct smell that takes me back to my mom standing by the washing machine, teaching me how to do my own laundry. At the time, I had no idea that Melaleuca was actually a plant that had more versatility than just household cleaners.

What?

Melaleuca, Melaleuca alternifolia, which strongly resembles a bottle brush, is native to Australia, and was originally used by the Aboriginal people beginning thousands of years ago. Lieutenant James Cook, who is credited for colonizing what we now call French Polynesia, is said to have used it to treat scurvy on his ships in the late 1700’s, and it became more popularly used as a first-aid kit antiseptic during World War II. Because we would need an entire forest to harvest one bottle of it’s essential oil, we do not grow Melaleuca in our Native Leaf garden, but we do use trusted sources that provide the purest oil available.

Why?

We love using Melaleuca because it's antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiviral, and immune-boosting properties are safe for topical use for humans, animals, and homes.

The 3 W's of Lavender

8/14/2019

Most people are familiar with Lavender and its distinct aroma because of its vast use in candles, oils, soaps, creams, home decor, gardens, teas, and even desserts. It's touted as the bearer of peace and calm but it has way more to offer than just that.

What?

Lavender, or Lavendula Angustifolia, is native to France and the Mediterranean. In ancient Egypt, it was used in the mummification process. It is in the mint family and prefers dry, sunny, and well-drained, sandy soil, and can be pretty particular about having its own space. Lavender essential oil, used in diffusers or in a carrier oil, is one of the most commonly used oils.

Why?

We love Lavender as a natural anxiety reducer and a mood lifter (let’s face it, the world could use more of that), and as a sleep aid for our little ones (can I get an “Amen”). It can help to calm a nervous stomach, lessen the tension headaches from long, stressful days, shoes away bugs, soothes irritated skin, helps in the disinfecting and healing of wounds. On top of all that, Lavender's benefits extend to our animal friends.

Ready to get your hands in the dirt with this week's feature?

What?

This bell-like perennial plant, with it's varying hues of white, pink, and purple, and blue, is native to Europe but grows well in all temperate climates including North America. It makes its home in moist and marshy land, can be grown straight from seed but is also easy grown by root division which makes our life easier. Growing a herb that requires tons of moisture, in an already extremely humid climate, makes for an interesting venture, let us tell you.

Why?

Way, way back in the 1700's Comfrey, was known as Knitbone and was used for mending broken bones. Three hundred years later, we are using it topically to relieve sprains, bruises, wounds, sports injuries, insect bites, skin inflammation, acne, scars, and stiff, aching joints.

The 3 W's of Calendula

8/4/2019

We don’t know about you but flowers just brighten our day. Not the kind that you buy from the store, but the kind that just grow and grow and grow right in front of our eyes. The idea of having a part in their bloom, from the planting to the constant care, and watching over, and then the harvesting, and preparation makes us feel proud not just to have them, but to use them in our products. Being invested in the whole process is an assurance that our whole being is present in each project, and your well-being is at the forefront of our mind. This week we want to talk about one particular flower that is very important to us.
What?
Calendula: (Calendula officinalis). It’s a happy little perennial flower that originates from Asia, Europe, Macaronesia, and the Mediterranean. You may have noticed that it looks a little bit like a daisy, which is due to the fact that it’s in the same plant family, the Asteraceae family. It loves a good warm, sunny day (don’t we all?), and has been used to garnish food, to decorate brides, and is known as a sacred flower in India.

Why?
Our love for Calendula goes far beyond its beauty. In addition to being a nutrient-dense garnish for salads, Calendula may be used to help with pain and inflammation, as an anti-fungal, and for nourishing and aiding in the correction of skin issues such as acne, eczema, diaper rash, and can be applied directly to wounds.
Which?
Here’s a list of products that we provide (click the link to see each product): Calendula Sugar Scrub, Chest Rub, Chronic Ear Funk Oil, Peppermint Lip Balm, Pure Calendula Oil, Tough Love Salve, Universal Salve.

Tell us

Have you purchased any of our Calendula products? If so, tell us what you purchased and what you think about it in the comments section below.
Disclaimer: These statements have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. You should not use calendula if you are allergic to ragweed, daisies, marigold, or plants in the Asteraceae/Compositae family. Doing so could cause an allergic reaction. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also avoid calendula because ingesting calendula may affect your hormone levels and induce menstruation. Anyone taking medication or scheduled for surgery should discuss calendula use with their physician first.
